GETTING AROUND
The Maltese Islands don't span a large surface area, which makes getting around relatively trouble-free.

The public bus service on Malta and Gozo is one way to get around as buses serve the major tourist areas. Buses take you practically everywhere but they are uncomfortable and most of the time not air-conditioned. Most of the time the sluggish system requires the traveller to make a stopover at the main bus terminus in Valletta . The cost of a bus route is cheap and ranges from €0.35 to €0.58 and the longest bus journey takes about fifty minutes; the average ride is between twenty and thirty minutes. Make sure to have small change handy and pay the exact fare.

Renting a car is a better option if you want to get to the farther, remote reaches of the island at your own leisure in a timely fashion. All the road signs are in Maltese and English and driving is officially on the left, but at times a rather hazardous affair demanding patience and clairvoyance at times. Major and local car hires are located on Malta and Gozo with daily rates of €16 - €28. International and national driving licenses are acceptable. A number of internationally based car hiring firms as well as local garages also offer the services of chauffeur-driven cars.

Renting scooters or motorbikes is theoretically an option, but travel this way can be somewhat limited as not all roads are two-wheel vehicle friendly. Riding a bicycle on Malta's busy roads is not for the fainthearted but guided rides in the countryside are pleasurable. The white taxi service can pick up passengers from anywhere, except bus-stops. Taxi services from the Malta International Airport and the Seaport Terminal to all localities in Malta are based on a fixed tariff but, as in neighbouring Maghreb countries, it is advisable to inform oneself before actually taking a cab.

A regular, safe and surprisingly punctual ferry service links Malta to Gozo, taking about 20 minutes each way. A sea plane service links Grand Harbour in Valletta to Mgarr Harbour in Gozo and is a superb way to get a thrilling bird's eye view of Malta's pocket-sized vineyards. There are also regular boat services between each island and Comino.  A water taxi service using traditional Maltese 'dghajsa' boats is also available in Grand Harbour to get a different perspective on the grandness of the ancient buildings and impressive sites along the quays.
